Sunday Toast, June
A mid-morning checkpoint
Sunday Toast is a letter from the past month, loosely.
I made Toasting Bread this month!! I write this excitedly because it is my favorite bread in the world. Or maybe the most fun-to-eat bread in the world. Half of it went to my parent’s household, the other half I sliced and froze for myself.
I double and sometimes triple the regular toasting time for each slice. The crumbs crisp up (perfect nooks and crannies for butter) and the interior remains soft.
This isn’t a light and fluffy country bread, not a sourdough style bread. I’d liken it more to the old school, yeast bread you would find in the type of bakery that also has bran muffins. For this reason, it’s a nostalgic bread.
For most of the past month, a morning slice of Toasting Bread has been my anchor. I’ve been getting up at 6am or so, baby monitor as my alarm. Bottle, diaper change, down the stairs, up the stairs, down again, unfold the stroller one-handed. We shoot out the door to get some sunlight, a 40 minute walk before the heat gets us. Then when that first nap begins, I get to prepare my slice of bread.
